Description

This print is a picture of the famous Brooklyn Bridge on a warm fall afternoon. In the background is a portion of the ever-changing Manhattan skyline. This print definitely captures a quintessential New York City landmark.

The Brooklyn Bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the world from it’s completion in 1883 until 1903. It crosses the East River between the boroughs of Manhattan (seen here) and Brooklyn.

I believe this photo conveys that the Brooklyn Bridge is truly an amazing sight and very historic. There was a lot of controversy during its construction (from the folks who made their living from the ferry traffic). There were lots of setbacks during the construction of this landmark.  There were serious injuries to both the man who started it (John Augustus Roebling) and his son (Washington Roebling). In the end, it was his wife (Emily Warren Roebling) who, working with her husband, was the guiding force who saw this now-famous bridge to its completion.

Now it’s hard to imagine New York City without her masterpiece bridge. It may have long been surpassed as the longest suspension bridge, but it’s still one of the best known. Mention New York City landmarks, and no doubt the Brooklyn Bridge will be high on the list for most people. And having walked across it several times, I’d suggest that’s a must-do for anyone visiting New York.

But this, one of my favorite prints of the bridge, is neither from crossing it nor in fact standing on either bank. This picture was taken from the middle of the East River beneath that great bridge. The Brooklyn Bridge is pretty stunning from the water is it not?
