About This Image:

Pictured here is the beautiful and historic Fox Theater, a staple on Peachtree Street, the main artery through Atlanta. The Fabulous Fox was built in the late 1920’s in an era when movie theaters were still relatively new. Going to the movies then was considered a real treat and the architecture of the old movie palaces like the Fabulous Fox reflected it. It’s called “Eclectic architecture” simply because it’s an eclectic blend of far flung influences. But all this was nearly lost when the Fox theater was threatened with demolition in the 1970’s. While many of the other grand movie palaces of Atlanta were lost, the Fox Theater was saved by determined citizens and continues to draw audiences today.

These days, it’s hard to believe the Fox was ever threatened with demolition. For those of us who moved to the area later, the Fox Theater had taken on an unquestionable landmark status, a cultural icon. When I started my series of local landmarks around the Atlanta area, the Fox was absolutely the first on the list.

Yet, this particular print is one of the last in my Atlanta Icon series. I literally took this photo of the old Fox the last week I lived in Atlanta before moving on to follow other dreams. When I look at this photo, it definitely reminds me of my old life in Atlanta.

This picture of the Fox Theater was taken with my fisheye lens as I wanted to try for something a little different and I really liked the result in this application. The result is a fun quirky image that it almost seems one could step into. It’s interesting that others have told me the same thing about this as well as my other fisheye photos.
