Description

There was simply something about the ruins of this Irish Monastery that spoke to me. I can’t explain it in any other way. Ross Errilly Friary was nestled in the Irish countryside in the midst of sheep pastures. And it seemed to echo with voices from the past. Standing there on a cold but sunny winter day, it just spoke to my heart.

Have you ever encountered a place like that? Somewhere like this Irish Monastery where you felt connected to the lives that of the past? I’ve had a few places like that but most of them had a known family connection. Although I have a smattering of Irish ancestry, I don’t know enough about it to draw such a connection, I just know that long after standing there, Ross Errilly Friary is a haunting memory in the best way possible.

Beyond the strange connection, Ross Errilly Friary is simply a beautiful example of an Irish Monastery. The medieval architecture reaches to the heavens and even in ruins, it has a sense of simple grandeur. I can imagine a visitor to the old friary in centuries past being just as struck by its beauty as we are of it today. There’s something picturesque about old architecture in a landscape and even more so when it’s in ruins.

I wanted to capture that sense of awe and the sweeping landscape. Beautiful skies, windswept grasses… well Ireland was simply a landscape lovers delight. This was particularly so in the west of Ireland in Connemara and County Galway. I spent a large chunk of my month in this part of Ireland with no regrets. Even if I weren’t a visual artist, I would have loved this region. But considering I have derived years of inspiration for my time there, it was well worth it. In fact, I could well imagine going back again some day, not just to County Galway but specifically to this beautiful old Irish Monastery.

Have you been to Ross Errilly Friary as well? Or do you just love these medieval ruins as much as I do? I hope you will take a moment to pause and tell me what it is that drew you to this particular piece of landscape art?
