About This Image:

One of the most striking sights in Paris is not doubt seeing the beautiful French Gothic architecture of Notre Dame de Paris rising above the waters of the Seine. It’s one of the first places I went in Paris on my first night there. And its beauty has stuck with me long since.

On this particular day, the sun was truly shining in Paris. And as I looked at the beautiful architecture I was reminded of a trip to London several years before, also in the winter. Our guide was pointing out some of the architecture of Westminster Abbey and remarked in a way we were quite lucky to be there in the winter. The trees normally obscured that view of the old church. I can imagine the same could be said of this view of Notre Dame de Paris in the summer.

No doubt those trees provide a beautiful shade but they likewise must block part of the view of that beautiful cathedral rising over the river. Every season has its perks, of course, but I was thrilled to see Notre Dame de Paris truly revealed with no canopy of green to compete with the blue sky and the dazzling golden sunlight.

I’ve said before that I think the sunlight in the winter in Europe has a special quality. I don’t know if it’s the angle of the sun or what exactly explains it, but when the sun shines, it’s intense and seems to flood the streets. It’s as if you could count every limb on those trees and trace every architectural detail on Notre Dame de Paris. The illumination is just that vivid don’t you agree?

Have you had the same pleasure of seeing Notre Dame de Paris on a gorgeous winter day? Or do you simply adore the old world architecture of those European Gothic cathedrals? Or maybe, like me, both column A and B? There are some prints that simply have appeal whether or not you have the pleasure of being there yourself.
