About This Image:

On my first trip to London, my first concrete memory is of wandering down a street rather aimlessly. It was my first time abroad and having arrived in the early hours of morning, it was all still sort of dream-like. All of a sudden in the distance, I spotted the Victorian Gothic clock tower at the Palace of Westminster. Yes, the one we all know informally as Big Ben even though that actually refers to the large bell inside the tower.

I’m sure I must have stood the for a few moments slack jawed. It was the first moment that I really knew without a doubt I was actually in the London I’d seen and read about. I walked and walked towards the distant beacon until that massive clock tower loomed over me larger than life.

I’ve stood there several times since. I’ve gazed dreamily at the Palace of Westminster and its famous clock over the course of multiple trips to London and it never feels old. There’s no doubt about it that this is one of my personal favorite London landmarks. Is it also one of yours?

This artwork is based on multiple photos I took while standing on the south bank of the Thames near Westminster Bridge on my last trip to London. But it’s ultimately the stuff of dreams. This is how I remember London several years on from my last visit there. I’ve stood in that same area on several trips and it’s one of the last places I stood on the night I left London in 2008. One wistful morning, this artwork of the Palace of Westminster just sort of came to me. I thought of that last night and how long it has been since I was last there! So, there’s a little bit of dreams and a little bit of longing in this picture of the Victorian Gothic beauty of the Palace of Westminster rising like a glowing dream about the dark river. I’m not sure if the image calls me back or I made this picture because I am called back?

If you’ve stood and gazed across the Thames in this same spot, perhaps this London print resonates with you, too? I’d love to hear what attracts you to this London landmark print!

Note: The Palace of Westminster and adjoining Westminster Abbey are part of a UNESCO designated World Heritage Site as well as being an enduring part of English Heritage.
