Description

I’ve tried many times to quantify what it is about sights like the Pensacola Beach Pier that stir my soul. I think for many of us it may be hard-wired like the electric feeling I get when a storm rolls in off the ocean. Maybe there’s a chromosome in there somewhere that explains why it’s beautiful.

Wherever the explanation may lie, some of my earliest memories of the sea are from summers along the Florida gulf coast. So there’s a sentimental journey for me when I see the Gulf of Mexico at sunset. Those rose-colored memories were the inspiration behind the pink-hued sunset beyond the Pensacola Beach Pier in this artwork. Although I’ve seen many sunsets that had this same color palate, this is far more a work of fiction than fact. I simply wanted that big pier to reach into the most beautiful sunset skies I could imagine over those gulf waters.

And maybe the love of a location or a type of landscape is genetic after all. A couple of years ago a cousin shared a photo of my great grandparents and one of my great, great grandmothers wading in the waters on Pensacola Beach. Does anyone out there know if nostalgia can be transmitted through the generations? Sigh!

Whatever the explanation, there’s a classic beauty to this Florida landscape that transcends being there. Whether you’ve watched the gulf waters hitting the sands by Pensacola Beach Pier or not, I bet you can appreciate this scene. From the blue and pink skies to the streaks of color reflecting in the water, there’s a sense of true bliss. And that massive old pier provides a literal anchor to the scene. It bridges the water, the sea, and the narrow strip of beach. I can hear the birds and smell the sea…

I hope you’ll take a second to smell the salt air and let me know what speaks to you most about this scene. Does it remind you of a day on Pensacola Beach? Or does it simply speak to the side of you that loves a beautiful sunset?
