About This Image
My coastal experience as a child were the beaches along the Florida gulf coast and I had only briefly visited Georgia’s Atlantic coast once before during my college years so I was amazed at the differences in the environment along Georgia’s barrier islands.
The beautiful saltwater marsh pictured here is near Lazaretto Creek between Tybee Island and Savannah on the mainland. It may look like a field of grain, but it’s really a salt tolerant grass that thrives here in this marshy land near Tybee Island.
It was an incredibly beautiful sight in the early morning sun which really amplified the golden color of the grasses further from the viewer in this panorama of the saltwater marsh. As I stood there, I couldn’t fathom why the distant grass was such a different color and how neatly the line was separating the two. I read later this is an indication of how much saltwater is in the marsh beneath. The green grasses grow nearer to fresh water which made sense as that was closer to the freshwater creek I had seen. Even having read, that, it still has a quite landscaped look to it doesn’t it?
I was really struck by this gorgeous landscape and spent hours here with my camera as the sun rose and the lighting changed.Yet, those first pictures with the golden light on the saltwater marsh and the mists of a slight morning fog burning off remain my favorite. It really captures the living landscape of the Georgia coast for me.
