Description
Having visited Edinburgh, Scotland twice, it holds a special place in my heart as does the beautiful castle in this print. Edinburgh Castle sits at the top of the Royal Mile. And on my last night in that beautiful Scottish city, I had to make one last walk up to the castle before going back to the hotel to pack.
When I headed up, IÂ had planned on being there at dusk when the castle lights came on for my last photos. That much went according to plan, but I couldn’t have asked for a better dusk than I got that evening. It was as if Edinburgh was wishing me a fond farewell with a great view of its famous castle against that dusk blue sky.
This photo of Edinburgh Castle was taken from the Esplanade. This wide open space in front of the castle is where a lot of events like the Military Tattoo take place. On a winter evening in January, it was largely empty save a few people like me up there to see the view. Compared to the madding crowds on my first time there, it was a refreshing change to enjoy the sight of that iconic fortress in relative peace.
I had stayed a couple of weeks and most of the tourists there for Hogmanay had long since gone home. I loved the New Year’s Festival so much I came for it twice, but I didn’t miss the crowds. A few people were still there though, and don’t those silhouettes provide a great sense of scale to that beautiful old castle in this print?
Note: Edinburgh’s Old Town (where the famous castle sits) and New Town are UNESCO listed World Heritage Sites.
