When I visited Egypt, getting to Abu Simbel from Aswan required joining an early morning convoy of cars and buses. This was an Egyptian safety precaution for those visiting the ancient temple to Ramses The Great because of its proximity to Sudan. On that long morning bus ride as I tried fitfully to sleep, I questioned my sanity, but as the amazing temple ruins at Abu Simbel came into view in the golden light of morning, it was worth every sleepless second and then some.

I’ll never forget the amazing golden morning light seen here in this Abu Simbel print. Nor will I forget the crowds. Except for those fortunate enough for time to stay overnight near the temple, Abu Simbel is a crowded affair. Lines of tourists at every turn. I think that’s why this is one of my personal favorite Abu Simbel prints because its framed in such a way that it omits the crowds. It feels to me much like I am an intrepid explorer who has just rounded a corner and discovered a massive forgotten Egyptian temple.

Mind you, I do cherish the shared memory of exploring this ancient site with so many people. I don’t want to sound like an old grump. There was an electric sense in the air at Abu Simbel that morning. I was surrounded by so many tired people suddenly awake in the golden light of a new day staring at an archaeological treasure in the Egyptian desert. There’s something uncanny about being in a large group of people with the same interest whether it’s seeing a band or a group of people with the same fascination with Egyptian antiquities.
