This golden Egypt print is courtesy of a ridiculously early bus to Abu Simbel. I would love to say that’s just how dedicated I am to catching the golden light of morning, but it’s really down to being how one gets to Abu Simbel from Aswan by road. For security concerns, the cars and buses heading to the ancient Nubian monument of Abu Simbel do it as a caravan up and back. I gather somewhat by design, it means the light on the incredible temple for Ramses The Great is just perfect moments on arrival.

In a way this golden Egypt view felt like a glimpse back to Egypt’s golden age of pharaohs. And Ramses II certainly fits that mold. Thousands of years later, he is still the only pharaoh who was every styled as “The Great.” In fact he had a number of appellations which included Ramses The Builder. Reigning for nearly 70 years, he was ruling the grandchildren of his original subjects when he passed. And as apparently a wise ruler, it seems to have been a reign that was became an almost mythological golden past of Egypt remembered and written about throughout the ages after his death.

Getting to Abu Simbel, one of his greatest temples may not have been the easiest trek but the reward was obvious as you can tell from this golden Egypt print. The ancient ruins are stunning in any light, but in that golden dawn glow, it was truly a not-to-be-missed part of the Egyptian experience.
