About This Image
I will never forget coming inside the historic Mosque of Muhammad Ali Pasha in Cairo. As soon as my eyes adjusted to the relative darkness inside, the first thing I saw was the interior of those amazing mosque domes. They were, of course, beautiful on the outside, but they were absolutely mesmerizing on the inside.
This mosque print captures the feeling I felt after I came in and gazed up at those elaborate mosque domes. There was a real sense of wonder and the exotic as I looked upon that classic Ottoman architecture. Islamic religious art has historically proscribed depictions of people. This tradition explains the rich geometric decoration of this historic mosque. To western eyes used to religious art illustrating scenes and figures from their texts on architecture of this vintage, the absence on these old mosque domes is noticeable.
Yet that was the difference that most captured my imagination as my eyes raised up to the mosque domes inside the historic Alabaster mosque. There’s something almost celestial about the geometry about the decorations. Don’t you think? In the sum of things, I really think there’s a heavenly characteristic in geometry as much as stirring images of saintly people.
Have you ever visited the Mosque of Muhammad Ali Pasha in the old citadel overlooking Cairo? Or does the soaring architecture of these old mosque domes speak to you as it did me? I hope you might take a few minutes to share what you find most striking about this Cairo print?
