Several years ago I had the opportunity to spend a long weekend wandering the coast from near Santa Cruz down to Monterey, California. That gorgeous coastline has stayed with me in my dreams every since. When the weekend drew to a close, I found myself staying quite near Old Fisherman’s Wharf in the heart of Monterey. And I couldn’t have imagined a nicer place to conclude my stay in California. The sea air and the colorful atmosphere of Fisherman’s Wharf was picture postcard perfect.

A friend and I took a whale watching boat tour that left from old fisherman’s wharf – out main reason for heading down there in fact. But after we got there, I saw the wharf was a destination unto itself Old Fisherman’s Wharf was built in the 1870s as a commercial wharf principally for the sardine fishing industry. That use tapered off after World War II and the focus of the historic wharf turned to tourism.

I have a suspicion that the second act of Old Fisherman’s Wharf in Monterey is far more colorful than the first act, and I wholeheartedly approve! The sight of the pier when our boat returned really caught my attention and this Monterey artwork is based off photos from that afternoon. I loved the weathered pilings of the old pier and the colorful buildings above the sea green waters. And just look at all the balloons! What a beautiful sight to welcome us on our return to the docks! There was definitely a vivid and fun carnival atmosphere on that sunny afternoon.
