About This Image

Before my my visit to historic Salem, Massachusetts, I had no idea they had a beautiful tall ship moored at Derby Wharf in the heart of the old town. I had never heard of the Friendship of Salem at all, but that beautiful boat was practically worth the visit to Salem alone.

It turns out that the beautiful sailing ship in this print is a faithful reconstruction of an 18th century three-masted sailing ship that once sailed from Salem. As harbors are much larger affairs these days, it may be hard to imagine that Salem was once a bustling port city. Once upon a time, Derby Wharf, seen in this Salem print, was more than an echo of Salem’s nautical past. Just imagine ships filling this harbor and people at the Custom House at the head of the wharf checking cargoes

This print was taken at those historic wharves at the Salem Maritime National museum in Salem, Massachusetts where the Friendship of Salem ship spends most of its time. The replica ship was completed in 1998, but along with the classic architecture of Salem, it helps give this New England print a very timeless quality. It really feels like this could be a scene from a quiet morning in Salem of long ago as much as today.

I love the sense of place in this scene from the tall ship in the foreground to Salem’s historic Custom House on Derby Street in the background. There’s just a real sense of New England history and charm, don’t you think? Have you ever wandered on these wharves, as well? Or do you just love the New England charm of this tall ship print?

Note: The old wharves in Salem are part of the Derby Street Historic District.

How Can I Help?

At the end of the day, it’s important to me that you can put a face with the art you’re considering purchasing through my site. Aside from the print vendor who ultimately prints and ships your order, this is a one man show. The person who made the art is the same one who is typing this message and the one who will answer your questions if you drop me a note.

You are not a number and I care that you are happy with whatever art you might buy here. I’m here if you’d like to ask questions before or after purchasing. And I’m also happy to work with you where possible to customize the work you’re buying. Maybe you’d like a tweak to the shape of a print to fit in with your existing wall art. Or you’d like to add a little nod to someone special in it? Just ask! I also keep a running list of subjects I don’t currently have but people are seeking. So if you enjoy the style of my work but didn’t find quite what you were looking for, please do let me know.

I’ve been an artist for 15 years now and most of that time it’s been my full-time passion. And it matters to both the endorphins in my brain and the food I put on the table for me (and my cats) that you find the experience of purchasing the products offered here to be a pleasure.
