Description

A.E. Housman – Loveliest of Trees Poem Metal Print by Mark Tisdale.

This poem metal print features the beautiful poem “Loveliest of Trees” by A.E. Housman. It was written about 1895 and published in his 1896 book of poetry titled “A Shropshire Lad.” When I read this poem for the first time in a high school English class it spoke to me. All these years later it still speaks to me even as the seasons pass by with wearying speed!

I was inspired to try my hand at illustrating this poem as you can see in this poem metal print. It features the text of the poem and the title along with A.E. Housman’s name. I figure I must not be the only person out there who was so moved by this poem to have it live in their heads years after reading it the first time. In fact, in my 20’s I bought a copy of A Shropshire Lad to read. Thoroughly enjoyed it but this will always remain the one poem that deeply connected to me for some reason.

The text of the poem follows in case you’re on a device where reading the image is more difficult.

Loveliest of trees, the cherry now
Is hung with bloom along the bough,
And stands about the woodland ride
Wearing white for Eastertide.

Now, of my threescore years and ten,
Twenty will not come again,
And take from seventy springs a score,
It only leaves me fifty more.

And since to look at things in bloom
Fifty springs are little room,
About the woodlands I will go
To see the cherry hung with snow.

I hope you enjoy the art I worked on to go with this favorite poem of mine. And if you’ve never encountered it before, I hope you find the message to make the most of time as meaningful and motivational as I have over the years.
