This River Street Savannah canvas print captures the warm tones of radiant afternoon light pouring down one of the city’s most visited streets. It’s based on photos I took one afternoon while visiting the Georgia coast in and near Savannah. It was one of those moments where the sunlight hits just right, warming up the old buildings and the skies overhead. It was such a rich scene with the passing streetcar that I instantly knew I wanted to capture that feeling.

Savannah’s River Street is such a rich mix of textures and time. The buildings wear their history with pride from the weathered bricks, to the wrought iron balconies and the old storefronts that have seen generations pass through. From the days when cotton shipped from here to now, there’s always a hum of activity along here.

People dash across the cobblestone street, duck into candy shops or galleries, and stop to watch the ships or street performers near the river. It’s the kind of place where you don’t need an agenda. You just time and curiosity to take in the sights and enjoy the vibes of River Street.

For years buses outfitted to look like streetcars have carried tourists along River Street and other points in Savannah. But in this scene, “Dottie” (that’s the streetcar’s name) was just making her way along the original tracks down the middle of River Street. Dottie is an authentic streetcar, originally from Melbourne, Australia.

The classic art deco streetcar was brought to Savannah years ago to revive a little of the city’s rail history. Savannah’s original streetcars were scrapped in the mid-1900s, like in so many cities, but this one was restored and reintroduced to the waterfront. She has since been retired from service but she adds a bright spot to this Savannah canvas  print.

This River Street Savannah canvas print is about that balance: the light, the movement, the mix of old and new. If you’ve visited before, I hope it brings back a bit of that warmth and charm. And if you haven’t yet, maybe it gives you a glimpse of why people fall in love with Savannah.

I actually spent a lot of my first visit to this part of the Georgia coast out on Tybee Island, but River Street left a strong impression. There’s something about it that reminded me of New Orleans. Different cities of course with their own unique histories, but I think the age and the European influence of these old cities marks them out as different and special.
