Auburn Sani-freeze – The Flush Canvas Print by Mark Tisdale

This Auburn canvas print features my take on the lost landmark, Sani-Freeze AKA The Flush.

Despite living in Auburn for a couple of years in college, this is a place I’ve only heard about. Of course for many Auburn Alumni and others who called Auburn, Alabama, home, Barber’s Sani-Freeze is a beloved and personal memory.

The building itself started life as The Doll House, a sandwich shop that was opened in the late 1930s. The Doll House lasted until around 1952 when the building was rented and re-opened as a dairy bar. Barber’s Sani-Freeze was a legend that would grow beyond the footprint of that tiny building in downtown Auburn.

Those not from Auburn may wonder why so many called the Sani-Freeze, The Flush. From what I’ve been told and read, that was because of the unfortunate coincidence that around the same time as the Sani-Freeze opened, Sani-Flush advertisements hit the air. Sani-Flush was a toilet bowl cleaner. And it was virtually inevitable someone made the mental calculation that the Flush would be a funny nickname for the place. And it was one that stuck to the end!

By the time I came to call Auburn home, The Flush had moved to a strip mall. A bank that owned the property ended the lease so that they could use the property for a new bank branch. There were initially plans to move the building but it was soon determined that the structure wouldn’t survive moving. The strip mall location never had the same air of authenticity and slipped quietly into the pages of Auburn history a few years later. Honestly if I ever visited the Sani-Freeze in its last incarnation, I don’t recall it. But hearing people who went to Auburn before me talk about “The Flush” makes me sad I never knew the magic of that institution.

This was a highly requested Auburn canvas print after people saw my War Eagle Supper Club art. And despite knowing it by reputation only I wanted to honor the memory of Barber’s Sani-Freeze. I would love if you took a moment to let me know if this auburn artwork brings back memories of your years at Auburn? If you have thoughts or questions, let me know.

Canvas Prints – Product Information

Stretched canvas prints are a great choice for decorating your home or office. Canvas art is a classic choice that is at home in traditional and modern decor alike.

After the purchase of your canvas print, it is made to your order. The artwork is printed on an acid-free poly/cotton blend canvas. The use of archival inks and substrate means that your canvas art print should last a lifetime without fading or loss of color.

When ordering your print, you have a choice between glossy and matte finishes. While I ordinarily love matte finishes on prints, I do like the sheen that comes on glossy canvas prints. Ultimately I would suggest letting the amount of light in your space guide your choice. In a brightly lit environment, I would lean towards a matte finish to reduce the chance of glare.

There are three wrap styles to choose from for canvas prints. The mirrored wrap choice mirrors and extends the image to the sides of the canvas wrap (without losing any of the original artwork on the front). The majority of the time I would suggest this is the best choice. The other two options are a solid black wrap or white wrap. You can see a preview of each option when selecting wrap color.

After printing, the canvas is stretched over and secured to a wooden frame of 1.5″ by 1.5″ stretcher bars. The entire production process takes from 5 to 7 business days. Your artwork will arrive in sturdy packaging. The hanging wire will be attached and all hardware necessary to hang your canvas print will be included. Canvas prints are a great ready-to-hang option.

How Can I Help?

At the end of the day, it’s important to me that you can put a face with the art you’re considering purchasing through my site. Aside from the print vendor who ultimately prints and ships your order, this is a one man show. The person who made the art is the same one who is typing this message and the one who will answer your questions if you drop me a note.

You are not a number and I care that you are happy with whatever art you might buy here. I’m here if you’d like to ask questions before or after purchasing. And I’m also happy to work with you where possible to customize the work you’re buying. Maybe you’d like a tweak to the shape of a print to fit in with your existing wall art. Or you’d like to add a little nod to someone special in it? Just ask! I also keep a running list of subjects I don’t currently have but people are seeking. So if you enjoy the style of my work but didn’t find quite what you were looking for, please do let me know.

I’ve been an artist for 15 years now and most of that time it’s been my full-time passion. And it matters to both the endorphins in my brain and the food I put on the table for me (and my cats) that you find the experience of purchasing the products offered here to be a pleasure.
