When I lived in Alpharetta, Georgia, one of my favorite walks concluded at the old Roswell Mill Dam on Vickery Creek. It was hard for me to believe that such a beautiful little oasis existed in Atlanta’s metro area. Walking along the trails leading to Roswell Mill Dam it was easy to forget the freeways and traffic beyond. There was a strong feeling of nature as well as a sense of the past since relics of the historic Roswell mill dotted the landscape from the trail head leading up to the beautiful man-made waterfalls where the old mill dam still stood.
In autumn when the fall colors were in full bloom, the Roswell Mill Dam could be particularly gorgeous as you can see from this print. I took this picture lying on a rock in the midst of the creek looking up towards the picturesque waterfalls. The sun had only recently come up and the lower reaches of the creek were still in shadows which lead the eye upward into the colorful tree tops.
There’s a real timeless sense standing in the midst of this little wood near the Roswell Mill Dam. You’re just down a slope from modern day Roswell’s downtown, but it feels hundreds of years away. Even when the colors were predominately green, it was a beautiful landscape to wander but when the fall colors broke, I could be found down here most any weekend enjoying the colors and quite capturing them as seen in this autumn print.
