I believe that I will always be struck by the amazing art that populates some of our older cemeteries. The beautiful statue in this print is but one lone example of the statuary and monuments I saw in my long morning exploring Glasnevin Cemetery in Dublin.

I didn’t do a lot of research before heading to Ireland. I had a month and I really wanted to enjoy that luxury and play it by ear. So, I had actually never heard of Glasnevin before arriving in Dublin. In fact, I happened to spot Glasnevin out the bus window as I was heading out of Dublin on my second day there. The beautiful sight I saw over the cemetery walls never left. And about a week later when I found myself in Dublin once more, I was determined to find the massive cemetery I’d seen from those bus windows.

It turns out that I had chanced upon the largest non-denominational cemetery in Ireland. Glasnevin is the final resting place to a million and a half souls. And of course, it’s ever so historic! Can’t you tell?

Although some of the recent memorials were also quite beautiful, I suspect ones like this classical female statue are from the Victorian era, a period of history when funeral art truly flourished. The statues like the ones I photographed at Glasnevin would have been quite at home in an art museum. I was struck by how much this robed lady reminded me of ancient Roman statues I’d seen when I visited Italy. It’s clear the sculptor was echoing those ancient classical artists.
