President Carter holds a special place in my heart. I grew up just 30 miles from Plains, Georgia, his hometown, and his election in 1976 is one of my earliest political memories. I was only four years old, but my parents made sure we visited Plains during his campaign, knowing how rare it was likely to be that someone in my proverbial backyard would ever run for president. Almost 50 years later, my parents were right as he’s still the only one! That proximity made his election unforgettable and left a lasting impression on me as a child. Though he was the first president I remember, my admiration for him grew over the years as I came to appreciate his work as a humanitarian and global advocate for peace. His connection to my hometown was just the icing on the cake.
