About This Image

I had a great sunny winter afternoon for my visit to Salem, Massachusetts and I had the chance to take in the sights like the beautiful old Custom House when things were a bit more low-key. I have my suspicions, anyway, that January is not quite so busy as some other times of the year would be. Salem is a quick train ride from busy Boston yet retains a lot of its classic New England charm. Walking the historic streets of Salem, it really does feel as if one has stepped back to an old seaside village while wandering in parts of Salem.

Salem was actually once a major port in New England, which explains why it has some grand old buildings like the Custom House seen in this print. Although the first custom house was built in 1645, the current one is the last of a long chain, built in 1819. It was very much built on the grand federal style of architecture. Look at the large eagle above the center of the cornice at the top.

What I love most about this photo of the Custom House isn’t the impressive architecture though but the lone little old lady who was walking in front of it when I photographed it. She looks so timeless in front of this historic building and gives a real sense of scale to the architecture in this print. I felt like including her in this Salem print gave it a little extra feeling of the streets of sleepy Salem.

Have you also walked on Derby Street in Salem? Admired that grand old Custom House? Or perhaps you love classic old Federal architecture? I’d love to know what interests you about this New England print.

Note: The Salem Custom House is part of the Derby Street Historic District.

How Can I Help?

At the end of the day, it’s important to me that you can put a face with the art you’re considering purchasing through my site. Aside from the print vendor who ultimately prints and ships your order, this is a one man show. The person who made the art is the same one who is typing this message and the one who will answer your questions if you drop me a note.

You are not a number and I care that you are happy with whatever art you might buy here. I’m here if you’d like to ask questions before or after purchasing. And I’m also happy to work with you where possible to customize the work you’re buying. Maybe you’d like a tweak to the shape of a print to fit in with your existing wall art. Or you’d like to add a little nod to someone special in it? Just ask! I also keep a running list of subjects I don’t currently have but people are seeking. So if you enjoy the style of my work but didn’t find quite what you were looking for, please do let me know.

I’ve been an artist for 15 years now and most of that time it’s been my full-time passion. And it matters to both the endorphins in my brain and the food I put on the table for me (and my cats) that you find the experience of purchasing the products offered here to be a pleasure.
