This Provincetown greeting card features art that captures a rainy night on Commercial Street, with reflections on the wet pavement and small groups of people walking under umbrellas. The Lobster Pot stands out with its bright neon, a well-known local landmark in part due to the bright neon signs. The Old Colony Tap is easy to spot nearby, and other storefronts and buildings line the street, their signs and lights softening in the misty rain. I designed the art on this Provincetown greeting card with a focus on atmosphere. The glow of lights and the stretch of reflections are meant to bring out a feeling of being there in that soft rain.
Commercial Street has long had a reputation as the center of Provincetown life. Shops, galleries, bars, and restaurants all line the street. On any given night, you might see couples walking close together whether under under umbrellas in the rain or not and friends drifting between familiar local businesses. Provincetown is a place that is both lively and welcoming, especially for those of us in the gay community. That is a reputation that is known by many whether they’ve visited or simply dream of visiting or living there. My hope with the image on this Provincetown greeting card was to create a scene that feels familiar and inviting to anyone who has been drawn to that part of Cape Cod.
For years I have been drawn to the mood of rainy night scenes. There is something about reflections on wet streets and the glow of lights that creates a dreamy feeling. It is a style I return to often. When I saw Commercial Street, with the bright neon of the Lobster Pot and the bustle of people in the heart of Provincetown, I could easily imagine how it might feel on a rainy night. The colors, energy, and character of the street made it a natural fit for the kind of scene I enjoy creating.
