About This Image
Dublin Landmark Art – Ha’Penny Bridge 5×7 Greeting Card by Mark Tisdale.
If I had to pick a favorite Dublin landmark, there’s little question in my mind it would be the graceful Ha’Penny Bridge as seen on this Dublin greeting card. There’s just a beautiful old world elegance to the architecture of the 19th century. A simple utilitarian way to cross the Liffey is rendered into an uplifting experience. This is truly a situation where form surpasses function. Yes, it gives a pedestrian a way to cross the river between north and south Dublin but it does so beautifully.
And this is a bridge that’s been a Dublin landmark for generations. Opened in 1816 as the Wellington Bridge, its official name eventually became the Liffey Bridge. But as it used to cost a half penny to cross, its unofficial name has long been the Ha’Penny Bridge. To give you an idea how stubborn this nickname is, there hasn’t been a toll to cross the Liffey here since 1919. Yet a century later, Dubliners and tourists alike still call it the Ha’Penny Bridge
If you’ve explored the rest of my Irish artwork, you likely know that my month in Dublin was in the midst of winter. No matter the weather, Dublin was a joy and beautiful to boot. But I wanted to imagine Dublin in the spring for this piece and it stood to reason that I would feature my favorite Dublin landmark in this artwork. This is how I imagine a beautiful spring day in the heart of old Dublin would be. Needless to say, I’m sure spring in Dublin would be grand and, of course, green.
I’ve dreamed about returning to Ireland in general and Dublin in particular every since I left, but this view of the Ha’Penny Bridge particularly makes me want to go back. I want to see this Dublin landmark with the new green of spring on the trees and I want to revisit all the beautiful sights of the city again.
Does the image on this Dublin greeting card make you want to return to Dublin as well? Or perhaps you live in Dublin and can wander over the Ha’Penny Bridge whenever you wish? I hope you will take a moment to share what attracted you to this Dublin greeting card?
