The artwork printed on this men holding hands greeting card holds a lot of meaning for me, even though the two figures in it aren’t based specifically on any particular couples. The scene is fictional, but the feeling behind it is real and rooted in my own hopes and dreams. It shows a quiet walk along a sandy beach, with the ocean stretching out on one side and grassy dunes rising on the other.
The couple walking hand in hand are relaxed and in their own little bubble together. They could be walking in silences listening to the sounds of the sea breeze and waves. Or they could be discussing plans later or dreams of their future or anything in between. Part of that is for the viewer to decide.
The setting in the image on this gay couple greeting card is loosely inspired by beaches along the Gulf Coast, from the Florida Panhandle through Alabama and into Mississippi. Because my parents grew up in south Alabama, some of my childhood summers were spent along those coastlines.
There’s something about the long grasses, the soft sand, and the gentle curve of the water that will always speak to me. The setting isn’t tied to one specific stretch of beach anywhere but I think it carries a bit of that warm and quietly beautiful feeling that so many of us find walking on our favorite beaches.
