About This Image
This print of the Wheatley Administration Building on the campus of Georgia Southwestern State University in Americus is a special one to me. After all, this is where I spent my undergrad years in college!
Well, not in this building of course, but I certainly think it represents the campus in my mind. Georgia Southwestern has, as I hope you can see here, a beautiful small town campus in rural South Georgia. For me, it was a great place to grow after high school. For those who haven’t read my story you might be surprised to know that I didn’t spend my years in Americus studying in GSW’s art department. I almost turned down that street once. I signed up for an intro drawing class as an elective, but I went exactly one day. The large list of supplies scared off this poor college student! No regrets, life unfolded as it was meant to, but it’s always interesting to ponder what if!
At any rate, if you’re here, most likely you’re interested in the art, and this scene captures one of the buildings that forms part of the historic core of Georgia Southwestern. The Wheatley Administration Building was built in 1918. The college itself only dates to 1906. It started life as the Third District A&M School. By the time I started at GSW, it was Georgia Southwestern College. When I left GSW had been promoted to a State University. The Wheatley Building is on the National Register of Historic Places.
It’s a beautifully maintained example of Neoclassical Architecture. The big dome over the top is truly iconic I think. Whenever I see it, I think of my years there. They seem like yesterday even if they weren’t!
I’d love to know what brought you here. Are you another Georgia Southwestern Alumni? Or perhaps you’re the proud parent of a graduate and are looking for the perfect Georgia Southwestern graduation gift? I hope you’ll pause for a few moments and share your story and what this Americus art print means to you?
