Every since I first saw surfers on the California coast several years ago, I’ve found myself mesmerized by the sport. Honestly surfing is one of the very few things I can sit and watch and lose myself for hours. It’s truly that fascinating and zen for me. How about for you?
Having heard Newquay was known for its surfing community, that was one of the things I was most excited about seeing on my trip to Cornwall several years ago. Not that the Cornish coast isn’t gorgeous in its own right. I would happily go there again and simply roam the countryside.
But that love of watching surfing is how I came to be standing on the beach lying in wait to capture the surfers heading out one afternoon on Towan Beach in Newquay.
I was going for an iconic almost-retro surfing print feel with this photo-based artwork. I wanted this print to feel like it could have come from a long ago surfing poster with those same cool retro-vintage colors. A product not just of a love for the surfer culture but of the passing decades giving its own soft hue to the colors.
But If I had to pick one favorite part of the print I captured on Newquay’s beach that afternoon, it would have to be the timing to capture both feet off the ground and the reflections in the wet sands.
