About This Image
Macon County Courthouse – Georgia Art Print by Mark Tisdale.
The subject of this Georgia art print is the 1894 Macon County Courthouse. Built in the Romanesque style of architecture, it was constructed to replace a previous courthouse lost to fire. Local lore holds that original plans called for it to be built in stone instead of brick but the cost was too high and the building organizers settled for a granite cornerstone. It’s also said that there was an attempt to move the county seat, and thus the new courthouse, to Montezuma. But Oglethorpe won out and remains the county seat to this day.
The architects for our handsome old courthouse were W. Chamberlain & Company of Knoxville, Tennessee. Plans were completed in 1893 with the building being finished the following year. The Macon County Courthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
In my memories of childhood, the courthouse was an off-white color. It’s possible when it was newly painted it had been white. Whatever the case, it wasn’t nearly as pretty as it is today having been restored to its original unpainted brick exterior. It’s shown in this print with red brick beneath picturesque blue skies.
