About This Image
London is a cityscape filled with landmark architecture – buildings so iconic they are known the world over. And there’s no question that St Paul’s Cathedral is one of them. The landmark cathedral was built by architect Sir Christoper Wren after the great fire of 1666. There is something truly majestic and, yes, iconic, about the massive dome of Saint Paul’s Cathedral in London. The way it rises above the skyline on the Thames is just unforgettable. And I’ve read that Wren’s plan to put a dome on the new Saint Paul’s was greatly resisted at the time. So resisted that he hid its construction.
It’s amazing how architecture that was not widely popular when it was built can later become truly classic. The Millennium Bridge, also pictured here, has similarly met with criticism. Maybe the message here is that it takes bold architecture to leave a lasting memory?
Whatever the case I love that London is city that is not afraid to mix incredibly modern architecture with classics. After all, if you’ve visited London, you know that it is a thoroughly modern city not a period museum or amusement park. Yes, there’s a wealth of history in London, but it’s also the beating heart of modern-day Britain. And the Millennium Bridge and a host of postmodern architecture around the city shows that it’s a city that’s alive and thriving and always moving forward.
Ultimately, I think in years to come (if not already), the Millennium Bridge will be just as loved as the other landmark architecture in the city. After all, in my mind, it joins Wren’s great cathedral with the river in a most dramatic fashion.
I have to comment on the clouds in this photo as they were incredibly dramatic and seemed to frame the dome of Saint Paul’s. I am ever amazed by the clouds in Britain. They seem to practically hang in the sky just out of reach, not miles above. They loom and they have drama the likes of which I don’t see as often anywhere else. For someone who is less thrilled with clear blue skies, London and Britain are this photographer’s dream.
