About This Image
Old Sentinel – Morris Island Lighthouse 5×7 Greeting Card by Mark Tisdale.
The title of the image on this Morris Island lighthouse greeting card is Old Sentinel. The Morris island lighthouse is largely in ruins and it seems an apt name for the old coastal guardian pictured here. Morris Island Light was built in 1876 on the south end of the entrance to Charleston Harbor. It’s still South Carolina’s tallest light. It may seem hard to picture now but when it was built there was a small community there in addition to the keeper’s cottage. Coastal erosion has since changed the coastline and the light was first automated in 1938 and finally decommissioned in 1962. Seen here in ruins with the moon acting as its lantern, it has a transcendent feeling.
Have you seen the Morris Island Lighthouse or have some connection to it? Or do you simply appreciate lighthouses in general? Either way I hope you’ll share with me what attracted you to the image on this lighthouse greeting card.
