About This Image
The night before I was to head out to the Aran Islands, a deep freezing fog set on Galway. For days straight, each morning had been foggy, but on this particular day, the fog simply never broke, and by nightfall, the streets were rolling in a deep fog. And, so I sat out into the cold night air and immensely enjoyed the ethereal air of Galway in a fog.
At the end of that long ramble, I ended up down on the Claddagh. The fog was, down by the waterfront, even thicker but the old street lights cast an amazing glow through the foggy night. As I turned around to head back into the city center, I chanced upon this little old man wandering up the Claddagh path towards the bridge over the Corrib.
There was something about him that captured my imagination. Any other time of the day, who knows if I would have noticed him, but ambling in the deep fog, he was suddenly a mystery. My suspicion of course is that he was simply heading home from the market, bags at hand with the night’s meal.
I really feel this phantom figure in the dense fog leaves the viewer of this image to wonder. We don’t know his story. Where was he going? Good deeds? Bad deeds? A simple trip home from the shops? Clandestine meeting? Dinner with friends?
With only this print as a witness, it’s up to the viewer to guess the deeper story that may exist.
All we know for sure is that on a small path on the Claddagh in a deep winter fog in Galway, a little old man passed quietly. His purpose, his frame of mind, or any other details are only our imaginings. And what do you imagine?
