About This Image
St Albans Abbey – 5×7 Historic Cathedral Greeting Card by Mark Tisdale.
The subject of this historic cathedral Greeting Card is informally known as St Albans Abbey or simply “The Abbey.” Officially it is The Cathedral & Abbey Church of St Alban which won’t win any points for brevity but is more correct. “The Abbey” has not been an abbey since the 16th century and has been a cathedral in the Church of England since the 19th century. But old habits die hard apparently!
St Albans Abbey and the city itself get their name from St Alban, the first British Christian martyr who lived and died in Roman Britain. Parts of the church date to Norman times – look at the older tower on the right edge of the image. But the more elaborate Gothic architecture is from an ambitious if inauthentic restoration in Victorian times.
Although it may not be how the church looked originally, you have to admit in the warm light of the late summer sun as seen in this artwork on this card it has a stirring presence with all those Gothic lines reaching towards the heavens.
