About This Image

The Big Chicken – Marietta GA Canvas Print by Mark Tisdale.

This unique Marietta GA canvas print features The Big Chicken, an Atlanta area landmark – and one that is truly unforgettable. In fact, if you are familiar with the area at all, you know that people in Marietta give directions based on which way to turn when you see the Big Chicken.

In fact, if you asked anybody living in Marietta, GA, to name a landmark, there’s no question that The Big Chicken would almost certainly be the first one off their tongues! Even before I had ever stepped foot in Marietta, in fact, I had heard of The Big Chicken. Not long after moving to the Atlanta area, a friend and I made a pilgrimage there just to see and eat inside The Big Chicken. And some years later when I began my series of Landmarks art focused on the Atlanta area, I had absolutely no question that I would be heading out to Marietta to capture that Cobb Parkway icon. Not only wasn’t it my first time visiting it, it was not my last. If you have any love for kitschy roadside Americana, then The Big Chicken in Marietta, GA, has to be in the pantheon of quirky cool roadside art.

If you’re not familiar with Marietta, GA, but you’re looking for prints for a friend who is from there, then you may be looking at this Marietta canvas print with a puzzled expression on your face. You see, The Big Chicken is an institution. It originally opened its doors as Johnny Reb’s Chick, Chuck and Shake restaurant in the 1960’s. By the 1970’s it had become part of the KFC chain. Over the course of the years, The Big Chicken has become something of a directional waypoint in Marietta. Ask someone for directions, and they’re very likely to tell you how to get there starting from that giant metal chicken! In Marietta, apparently all roads do lead to The Big chicken. This is a landmark that is so loved by locals that when the structure was damaged in a storm in 1993, there was a public uproar when tearing it down was suggested. The landmark seems to be safe from such threats today having been rebuilt and renovated more than once since. In metro areas like Atlanta, there are few constants, but it looks like this is one!

Over the past decade, this Big Chicken canvas print has been one of my most popular. I suspect most who find the artwork on this print are looking specifically for a Big Chicken scene to show their love for Marietta. But it’s also possible some of those prints went to people who simply love the quirky retro vibe of this 20th century roadside attraction. It is an impressive piece of Americana, after all.

I hope you’ll take a moment to leave a comment and share your memories about The Big Chicken in general as well as your thoughts about this Marietta, GA, artwork. What drew you to the item? The deep primary colors? Reminds you of Marietta? Or give your own answer – I’d love to hear it!

This Big Chicken artwork is offered as a fine canvas print ready for framing. It’s also available in other print formats as well and a variety of sizes from small prints to large statement art pieces. And if you have questions about any of the print choices for this Atlanta area print or other questions, please feel free to send me a message.

Canvas Prints – Product Information

Stretched canvas prints are a great choice for decorating your home or office. Canvas art is a classic choice that is at home in traditional and modern decor alike.

After the purchase of your canvas print, it is made to your order. The artwork is printed on an acid-free poly/cotton blend canvas. The use of archival inks and substrate means that your canvas art print should last a lifetime without fading or loss of color.

When ordering your print, you have a choice between glossy and matte finishes. While I ordinarily love matte finishes on prints, I do like the sheen that comes on glossy canvas prints. Ultimately I would suggest letting the amount of light in your space guide your choice. In a brightly lit environment, I would lean towards a matte finish to reduce the chance of glare.

There are three wrap styles to choose from for canvas prints. The mirrored wrap choice mirrors and extends the image to the sides of the canvas wrap (without losing any of the original artwork on the front). The majority of the time I would suggest this is the best choice. The other two options are a solid black wrap or white wrap. You can see a preview of each option when selecting wrap color.

After printing, the canvas is stretched over and secured to a wooden frame of 1.5″ by 1.5″ stretcher bars. The entire production process takes from 5 to 7 business days. Your artwork will arrive in sturdy packaging. The hanging wire will be attached and all hardware necessary to hang your canvas print will be included. Canvas prints are a great ready-to-hang option.
