The Old School – Montezuma Georgia 5×7 Greeting Card by Mark Tisdale
The old school pictured in this Montezuma Georgia greeting card is one of those buildings that carried different names throughout its history. So the name of the school varies with the generations. In my time, this was Macon County Elementary School. And, in fact, that was its last use before being replaced and closed. Built in 1921, it was originally a city school for Montezuma and served all ages. By the late 1950’s, after school consolidation, it was Macon County High School for a time.
The architectural style of the old school was fairly common in the early decades of the 20th century. Some refer to it as Collegiate Gothic while others call it Institutional Gothic. Whatever the name, to me it was a classic red brick schoolhouse – very similar to one my Mom attended in her hometown. Now fewer survive. After closing, the one here in Montezuma was eventually demolished. So the image on this card is my tribute to my own memories of that old schoolhouse.
