Description

There was some ineffable quality to the Little Greek Theatre at Pompeii. Although it was in ruins, there was a haunting stillness that felt as if the actors and the audience had simply stepped away for the moment. And yet at the same time, I felt the weight of the years here. It was while standing in the Little Greek Theatre that I really felt the millennia that have passed since Vesuvius buried Pompeii and its unlucky inhabitants.

The worn stones of the seats of the Little Greek Theatre spoke to countless people who wore them down before they were ever buried. Those ancient Romans must have enjoyed many hours of entertainment there. I really feel a connection with the people of ancient Pompeii when I look at this print. I can imagine them sitting there enjoying a show together. Can you see them too?

The ancient quality of this Little Greek Theatre print is what ultimately inspired the sepia-toned scene you see. I originally tried this Pompeii print in color as well as black and white and neither worked for me. There just wasn’t that same sense of ancient drama. It’s funny how much a color can influence our feelings. The color left me cold and the black and white lacked the pop of this print. And as this is one of my more popular prints from Pompeii it seems the vintage feel is as attractive to other as it is to me.

Have you stood and gazed at the seats in the Little Greek Theatre in Pompeii? Or perhaps this print speaks to you simply because of the sincere antiquity it portrays? I would enjoy it if you took a moment to let me know what speaks most to you in this Pompeii print?
