Description

This print of Sumidero Canyon in Chiapas will always be something of a lesson to me. Sometimes opportunity presents itself where we least expect it. We had scheduled our boat trip on the waters of the Grijalva River for our last day in San Cristóbal de las Casas. The night before the clouds had began to gather and in the morning as we left in a light rain, it barely seemed worth leaving a warm hotel room. The skies were slate gray and the sun was nowhere in sight. It was an altogether unappealing start to the day as we headed off for Sumidero Canyon.

By the time we got to the boat landing in Chiapa de Corzo, the rain had stopped and the skies were looking just a bit more promising. Our boat adventure in that amazing canyon was off to a much better start than I had expected. And had I enterained the notion to stay behind, look what I would have missed!

Sumidero Canyon (Cañón del Sumidero) was far more than I had expected. When I read up on it later, I discovered the canyon on a geologic time scale is on par with the Grand Canyon back in the states and carved to great depths by a river in much the same fashion. And as you can guess from this print if you haven’t seen it in person, it was just one beautiful bend after another with towering cliffs dripping in verdant green foliage. Sumidero Canyon was truly an amazing and scenic place! I was genuinely sorry when that adventure drew to a close!

This print is based on photos from one of the more majestic drops in the canyon. Morning fog was still clinging to the trees at the top of the canyon and there were mists that had not yet burned off down on the surface of the river. And everywhere you looked was green… It almost feels like a dream I had now…

Have you had your own boat adventure in this beautiful canyon? Or do you simply appreciate the majestic beauty of this scenic Mexican landscape art? I hope you might take a few moment to share what attracts you most to this print?
