About This Image
This Holyrood Palace print is based on a photo taken on New Year’s Eve day on a visit to the beautiful Edinburgh Royal landmark. The weather was, predictably wet, but in between the raindrops, there was some beautiful light that really highlighted the gorgeous Baroque architecture of the old palace.
I loved the contrast between the blue skies, the moody clouds and the wet pavement reflecting the royal palace. So much contrast and depth! I’ve gone over the original photo by hand, leaving in the details that most struck me like the small collection of people standing in the plaza outside. I love the sense of scale they gave to this Holyrood palace print. Without people sometimes it’s hard to gather how big or small a building may be.
The Palace of Holyrood House, as it is officially known, is the official residence of the Queen in Scotland. But outside of a period in the summer, the royal family spends more of their time in Scotland at their private residence. I say with some irony that I’ve never toured the inside of Buckingham Palace despite going to London several times, but I had to see the grounds and inside of Holyrood Palace. There’s just such a sense of history there and it feels like a proper old palace to me. It’s the type of fairy tale castle you would find in the pages of a storybook.
To me this Holyrood Palace print captures much of the spirit of Scotland from the changeable weather to the landscape. That’s a little glimpse of Arthur’s Seat in adjacent Holyrood Park. And on the left hand side are the ruins of Holyrood Abbey – more history!
Built in the 17th century, I think Holyrood Palace is very much in keeping with the idealized image people have of old European castles, from castellated roof-lines to towers! Actual medieval castles didn’t tend to be quite so grand never mind the large open windows. But our view of them looking back from modern times tends to be more like this beautiful palace
Does this Holyrood Palace print appeal to you because you have also walked on the same wet pavement outside this grand palace in Edinburgh?
