Ancient Mesoamerican Prints

There’s simply something special about ancient Mesoamerican art and architecture. Perhaps it’s simply the stark contrast between western art and architecture which is the cultural legacy of much of the modern world. Or maybe it’s the mystery at the heart of Mesoamerican culture. Even though much of the culture was intact when Europeans collided with the ‘new world’ so much of Mesoamerican culture and tradition was lost in that clash.

Whatever the reason, I was entranced the first time I saw Mayan ruins in person and it only made me want to study and see more of their art and architecture. And if you’re exploring my artwork based on those experiences, I have no doubt you share that same love. From ancient pyramids to ruins in jungle landscapes, Mesoamerican culture still whispers to me when I look at the artwork in this category.

When we think of the Mayan ruins, we tend to think of the big known places like Chichen Itza and Palenque. There are a handful of major Mayan cities that have captured attention, but like our world today, every city is not a major one. On my first visit to the Yucatan, I took a…

Visiting the Teotihuacan Ruins was an amazing experience. Like I suspect most who have been, I will never forget climbing both the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon. The climb to the top of the Pyramid of the Sun was by far the more taxing, but it was the nearly aerial…

  • Unique Mayan Architecture - Uxmal Pyramid Print by Mark Tisdale

Unique Mayan Architecture – Pyramid at Uxmal Art

    $24.00

Having seen the Mayan architecture at Chichen Itza first, Uxmal felt much different from the very moment I entered the site and saw the imposing mass of the Magician’s Pyramid towering over me. Mayan Adventure Art Print – Palenque Ruins

The inspiration from art can sometimes come from unexpected places. During my own Mayan adventure at Palenque, I was photographing the ruins of the Temple of the Inscriptions. The Mayan Mystery – Chichen Itza Art Print

If you’ve explored many of the ancient ruins in the Yucatan region, you’ve likely encountered a variety of Mayan serpents. This motif is carried beyond just the temples to Kukulkan. This particular Mayan Serpent, for example, is from the edge of the ancient ball court at Chichen Itza. Although it does represent the ancient Mayan…

  • Ruins of Chichen Itza - Mayan Temple Art Print by Mark Tisdale

Mayan Temple – Chichen Itza Ruins

    $24.00

There’s something about Mayan architecture in particular and ancient Mesoamerican architecture in general that I find fascinating. But I’m hard-pressed to put it into words. But this ancient Mayan Temple definitely stands out among the examples I’ve seen. Compared to the massive pyramids, it’s hardly the largest or most impressive from that angle, but there’s…
