Georgia is on my mind, is it on yours too?

Having lived just about all my life in Georgia, I wanted to create a piece of art that represented my home and as you can see from this rustic map, our state has a fairly recognizable shape. So, from the start, I knew I wanted the geography of Georgia to be a major part of this print. And then it occurred to me that I should include a few words that would be recognizable to any one from the Peach State – Georgia On My Mind. As the official state song since April of 1979, it only seemed right!

Georgia On My Mind, of course, was made famous by singer and Georgia native, Ray Charles. The song was released in 1960 and has enjoyed incredible staying power. Decades later for many of us, it would be hard to imagine any other song that could represent our state quite so well. And I for one only need to think of those few words to think of home and feel a gentle fondness for this place.

That sense of warm nostalgia is what inspired me to take this Georgia On My Mind map art in a rustic direction. The wood and tarnished metal style has a sense of history to it that goes well in representing a corner of America with a rich heritage. Georgia’s long history is not only as one of the original 13 colonies but reaches far back into pre-colonial times.
