It’s possible that I passed Maloney’s Corner shop numerous times during my weeks in Galway but it obviously never really registered on me. It’s amazing how much a foggy night can transform the streets even of a place you know well. Fog adds a whole separate surreal layer to the moment. The swirling mists on a dark night are definitely an artwork in its own right.
On this particular foggy night that little corner shop really spoke to me. I loved the gritty urban feel and the indistinct people standing in the mists at the door. And of course, the bright yellow seemed like a beacon in the cool fog-filled air.
Life is full of chance moments. If I had left for the Aran Islands one day sooner, I’d have missed this night of freezing fog. And the night I stumbled on this little yellow corner shop on the streets of Galway was honestly one of my favorite nights from an art perspective. Although on any other level, I left my heart in Galway before I even left! What a fantastic little Irish city.
