Description

Sapelo Island Lighthouse – Georgia Coast 5×7 Greeting Card by Mark Tisdale.

This Georgia coast greeting card features a scenic view of Sapelo Island lighthouse on a sunny day. The skies in the background are cloud streaked and vivid and you can see where the island landscape meets the Atlantic ocean.

Sapelo Island is a barrier island off the coast of Georgia in McIntosh County. The bulk of the island is state owned and protected but Sapelo is also home to Hog Hammock, the last known Gullah community. The Gullah are an African American community with a distinct culture and creole language.

Sapelo Island Lighthouse is on the southern tip of the island. It was built in 1820 to aid navigation for ships coming to the port at Darien. It’s the second oldest surviving brick lighthouse in the US. For decades the lighthouse was in ruins as a result of severe damage in an 1898 hurricane. From 1905 to 1934, a metal light tower stood nearby to replace the lighthouse but it was eventually relocated to Michigan. In the 1990’s the state undertook repairs and Sapelo Island light was restored to its 1890 appearance. It was also added to the National Register of Historic Places. The light was re-lit but it is not an official navigational aid. But it sure looks lovely doesn’t it?

Have you visited Sapelo Island Lighthouse or do you simply love old lighthouses? I hope you’ll share what attracts you to the artwork on this greeting card?
