Description

I truly love featuring historic places like Key West’s Sloppy Joe’s Bar. For those not familiar with the history of Key West, this was a haunt of Ernest Hemingway himself. The present bar on Duval Street and the original on Green Street were both owned by one of Hemingway’s friends, Joe Russell. In fact, it’s said that Hemingway was the one who encouraged Russell to name it Sloppy Joe’s Bar after another bar in Cuba. By virtue of its association with Hemingway, the bar is on the US National register of historic places. The building dates to 1917, but Sloppy Joe’s Bar opened at this location in 1937. Hemingway, already a regular, would frequent the bar with  his friends (other writers and artists) throughout the remainder of his life.

This little corner of historic Key West, Florida, has gone on to become a landmark throughout the passing years. And I felt like one of my rain-soaked, colorful prints was a perfect way to celebrate this beautiful piece of Key West life today. Storm blue skies outline the cityscape complete with palm trees. And of course, the bright lights of the bar reflect in the watery street. There’s really a sense of the vibrant life of Key West in this artwork, I think. And on the corner is a couple lost in a kiss. I enjoyed working on all the little details in this print from the signs over the entrance to their reflections and the building surrounding 201 Duval Street. the intention was for you to almost hear the rain drops pattering into the street on this particular evening in the Florida Keys.

I’ve had several people suggest this particular Key West landmark to me and I’m thrilled with the outcome of this effort. I think this could be a beautiful memento of a fun trip to the Florida Keys whether you’re buying it for yourself or for someone who loves the location. I do hope you’ll take a moment to share your thoughts about this Sloppy Joe’s Bar artwork. Does it remind you of a particular night you spent there? Or perhaps you just want to discuss the mood of the setting as presented?

If you have questions about this print or any of my other work, don’t hesitate to send me a message!
