Description

Dún Aonghasa – Prehistoric Hill Fort Art Print by Mark Tisdale.

This prehistoric hill fort art print features a panoramic view of Dún Aonghasa on the Aran Islands. This amazing structure is still only partially understood. There’s no written record explaining why it was built or even who built it. The theories are predictably all over the place. There are several ruined forts like this on the Aran Islands. Some people have theorized that we are witnessing a people that were pushed to the edge of their world seeking safety from unknown forces. There are others who think that Dún Aonghasa had a ceremonial purpose. Clinging as it does to the face of a cliff, there’s a raised platform inside that stands at the edge. There’s a line of thought that ancient people may have considered this place sacred, a sort of junction between worlds. Standing there, I can only say I lean a little more towards the sacred space but I’ll freely admit that both versions are somewhat romantic attempts at understanding the intentions of long ago people.

Whatever the purpose of the prehistoric hill for featured in this panoramic art print, there’s no denying the amazing landscape it inhabits. The rocky and windswept Aran Islands are simply gorgeous and inspiring. As a tourist I loved seeing the sights, and as an artist I found the vistas captivating and worth capturing.

What caught your attention in this Dún Aonghasa art print? Have you been to the Aran Islands perhaps? Or are you simply a fan of all things old and mysterious?
