Description

It was easy to lose track of how much time I spent wandering along the banks of the Seine. From Notre Dame all the way down to the Eiffel Tower is a UNESCO designated World Heritage Site. And for good reason! Never minding the long history in that part of Paris, that stretch of the river is just one beautiful piece of architecture after another. There’s no question I’d like to go back some day and, with more time, explore Paris further afield, but the banks of the Seine was the part of Paris I haunted most in my short stop there.

I was pleasantly surprised one afternoon when I stumbled upon this section of the banks of the Seine just below the famous Eiffel Tower. Upon wandering down there, I found what appeared to be boats where people actually lived rather than the obviously commercial piers further upriver. In fact, the man strolling in the left hand of the frame in this picture was returning to the beautiful red boat in the foreground. Imagine living with that mammoth work of art towering above you and the Seine below your feet. Must be a beautiful life as it certainly makes for an enchanting print of Paris.

And his pretty red home made for a beautiful way to frame that landmark tower as it pierced the wintry Parisian skies. It’s interesting how time changes our attitudes. When the tower was being erected on the banks of the Seine over a hundred years ago, it was meant to be temporary and it was still met with public outrage. Artists in particular said it spoiled the beautiful skyline of Paris. A century later, it still stands, a temporary work of architecture that it’s now hard to imagine Paris without!
