Description

Galway is one of those places that gets under your skin. If you’ve been there, I suspect you know what I mean. It didn’t take long at all for me to decide Galway was one of my favorite Irish cities. I took an initial bus tour around Ireland and spent only a single night in Galway of that first week. When I left the next morning, I was already planning to come back to Galway in my month of Irish wandering.

Seen in this art print is the Galway Cathedral dome rising above the skyline on the River Corrib near sunset. This print is from my second visit to Galway. I had been back in the city only a short time and had already found my way down to the waterfront to see the sunset. As I reached the mouth of the Corrib on that cold but clear afternoon, I looked up the river and saw Galway Cathedral Dome rising above the skyline. This was actually my first sighting of the cathedral and I assumed it was quite an old church. It wasn’t long before I found out that Galway’s cathedral was only completed in the 1960s.

You can clearly tell by the style of Galway Cathedral Dome that they were very much inspired by classic renaissance architecture when it came time to build it. From this vantage point, it’s not quite apparent, but Galway cathedral rises out of Nun’s Island in the middle of the swift waters of the Corrib. It was built on the site of a former jail, and I suspect that the Galay Cathedral Dome was a much more picturesque addition to the city skyline. It definitely has the genuine old world European feel one would expect in an old Irish City like Galway.

Have you stood along the banks of the Corrib at sunset, too? Or do you simply adore the old world charm of Ireland beneath sunset skies? You need not have been to love this print, that’s for sure!
