Ideal Georgia Depot – Macon County 5×7 Greeting Card by Mark Tisdale.

This Macon County greeting card features the historic Ideal Georgia depot. This railroad depot was built circa 1906 as the Atlanta Birmingham & Atlantic Railroad Depot. The depot is actually integral to the mythos of Ideal. So the story goes, the community here was originally called “Joe Town” after one of the leading residents of this little railroad village. But when the depot was opened one of the visiting railroad executives referred to the community as an “ideal” location and the name took on a life of its own. Ideal was incorporated in 1907.

I chose to depict the depot as an Ideal version of itself. Being lucky enough to come across a 1980’s photo of the depot, I saw that it originally had a tile roof that has since been replaced with asphalt shingles. But there was a real charm to the old style roof with that victorian tower that I found so appealing.

The Ideal Georgia Depot is now used as a community center . Like most old passenger/freight depots in small towns across the country, it fell out of use but is still a source of local pride. So many have been allowed to fall into ruin so it’s wonderful to see one that is well-loved like this one, don’t you agree?

I hope you’ll share your thoughts about the Ideal depot and my depiction of it. What attracts you to the image on this greeting card?
