Description

Montezuma United Methodist Church – Georgia Metal Print by Mark Tisdale.

The subject of this Georgia metal print is the 1916 Montezuma United Methodist Church. The building was designed in the Greek Revival style by T. Firth Lockwood, Jr. He was part of a family of architects who designed many beautiful buildings across the southeastern US around the turn of the last century. In fact, as in Montezuma, you often find more than one building by the family. It seemed inevitable if the city had one building by the Longwoods, they liked it and would ask them to design at least one more. In Montezuma, he also designed the Carnegie Library built in 1907.

The congregation of the Montezuma United Methodist church dates back much further than their current church building. They first organized in Montezuma in 1867. The latest church on North Dooly Street at over a century old seems to be a long lasting sanctuary. The architecture of it certainly makes for a striking image.
