Whitby Abbey Ruins By Night – England Art Print by Mark Tisdale.

This England art print features a magical view of the Whitby Abbey ruins by night. This image has been floating around in my head for awhile. There’s something, to me, a little magical about old roofless churches and ruins with their gothic arches reaching into the sky. In my mind’s eye the same scene by moonlight would be even more magical. You can almost imagine the ghosts that might come out by the light of a full moon at such an historic old building.

Whiby Abbey was built above the cliffs at Whitby England in the 7th century. It came to its current state in the time of King Henry VIII during the dissolution of the monasteries. By that point the original monastery had been rebuilt in the 13th century so the ruins we see today are those of the 13th century monastery. Long abandoned, the medieval ruins were further damaged during the First World War in a 1914 bombardment. The attack was not aimed at Whitby Abbey itself but nearby military installations. Like many historic and picturesque ruins, Whitby Abbey is maintained in its current state by English Heritage. Aside from its actual historic pedigree, the Whitby Abbey Ruins also appeared in Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

I would love to know what attracts you to this particular England art print? Is it the history of old ruins like this? The magic of the moonlit scene? Or perhaps its literary connection? I hope you’ll share your thoughts.
