Description

Yaquina Head Lighthouse – 5×7 Oregon Coast Greeting Card by Mark Tisdale.

This Oregon coast greeting card features the beautiful Yaquina Head Lighthouse. It’s depicted against with a rainy night sky dominating the backdrop and enveloping the scenery of this historic light.

Yaquina Head Light is a 19th century lighthouse. Construction started on the 93 foot lighthouse in 1871 and was completed by 1873. A soft warm glow emanates from the small cottage at the light’s base. This is apparently not the original keeper’s house which was ultimately demolished. Regardless, there’s something welcoming and comforting about the glow both from the cottage and from the lantern itself. Do you feel that way, too?

The lighthouse in its early years was known to locals by the name Cape Foulweather. Doesn’t that sound like something out of a book? The light was automated in the 1960’s when it still belonged to the US Coast Guard. Today it belongs to the Bureau of Land Management as part of the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area. It was added to the United States National Register of Historic Places in 1993.

This Oregon artwork has a lovely mood that is a mix of the cool blues of a rain swept night on the coast and the warm golden colors of the lantern and cottage lighting. I love lighthouses in general but I particularly love creating artwork like this that depicts them with the lamp aglow at night. What caught your eyes in the image on this Yaquina Head lighthouse greeting card? I hope you’ll share your thoughts about this scene.
