Colonial Williamsburg Art

Anyone who knows me even a little knows that I am fascinated by history. And there are bonus points for my interest when that history intersects with my own family history. Thus my visit to the beautiful streets of Williamsburg, Virginia, several years ago was truly the opportunity to visit nearby historic Jamestown. I would have been fascinated by the site of the first permanent English settlement no matter what, but knowing that I was walking the same ground of my colonial ancestors was an amazing experience.

While Jamestown is a great archaeological site, Williamsburg as it turned out was the perfect companion city to my Colonial American experience. After all, it is on the historic streets of Williamsburg that one really gets the feeling of life in Colonial America. Granted nothing is truly like being there hundreds of years ago, but Williamsburg is packed with incredibly well preserved colonial architecture as well as some beautiful reconstructions of buildings from historic Williamsburg’s storied past.

Williamsburg reminds me a lot of some of the quaint villages in England. Those villages stagnated after their local industry died. In the case of Williamsburg, it was the colonial capital of Virginia. But after the capital moved to Richmond in 1780, Williamsburg’s star waned. But that misfortune led to the Williamsburg we know and love today. Since the city didn’t grow and prosper, the original colonial architecture survived to the present day rather than being bulldozed under in the name or progress long ago.

It is that timeless quality of old Williamsburg that my prints from that beautiful city have captured. It is a city that has the ineffable quality of Americana, the American ideal as we still envision it today in some fashion. There’s no doubt these prints call me back to Williamsburg again every time I look at them. There is simply a quaint charm to these Colonial Williamsburg art prints that will speak to you, too, whether you have been there or not.
